Hockey is back and that warms the soul of 5 Bets. We love the NHL and feel it is one of our stronger betting markets. We take a look at two games on Thursday that we like.
College football is also getting some major attention this week. It’s one of the best weekends so far this season and there are two games we have zeroed in on with wagers.
Finally, we are eying an NFL game that has some serious potential. It might be the bet of the week.
5 Bets to Make this Week
- Calgary Flames -118 over Colorado Avalanche
- Under 6 goals NY Rangers-Minnesota Wild
- Texas Longhorns -16 over Iowa State Cyclones
- Georgia Bulldogs -36 over Vanderbilt Commodores
- Green Bay Packers -7 over NY Jets
Avalanche Run Out of Gas in Calgary
The defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche will be on the second leg of back-to-back games, having played the Chicago Blackhawks at home on Wednesday.
They will have to get on a plane and fly north of the border to face a very strong Calgary Flames team who are the seventh pick to win the Cup.
This is early in the season so fatigue hasn’t totally set in, but the Flames are 7-3 in their last 10 home games dating back to last year.
I like Calgary to take this game.
Prediction: Calgary -104 over Colorado (-110 at BetRivers)

Rangers Ride Hot Goalie
The New York Rangers opened the season hosting the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday in a rematch from last year’s Eastern Conference Finals.
It was a battle of goalies with New York’s Igor Shesterkin and Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy battling it out. As a result, the Under cleared by 1.5 points.
Minnesota’s netminder Marc-Andre Fleury is as good as those two in flashes but it shouldn’t matter. This is going to be a defensive struggle and while the Wild will try and pepper the Rangers’ net, Shesterkin will be able to repel them.
The Under is 6-0 in New York’s last six games and the Wild have hit the Under in six of eight times against the Eastern Conference teams dating back to last year.
Prediction: Under 6 goals (-115 at BetMGM)
Watch: Thursday 8 p.m. ET ESPN+, FuboTV
Texas Longhorns Keep Rolling
The Texas Longhorns are fresh off dismantling the Oklahoma Sooners on the road, 49-0 and now get to return home and host the Iowa State Cyclones.
It’s a big spread, the Longhorns opened at -14 but it has gone up to -16. That shouldn’t scare you off Texas. The Longhorns are 5-1 against the spread in their last six games when they were favored by 16 or more.
They are also 5-0 ATS in their last six games at home and 5-1 in their last six after a victory of 20 or more points.
The Cyclones have one of the most anemic offenses in the country, scoring just 20 points in the last two games. They failed to score a touchdown last week.
Texas can score almost at will. The Longhorns have scored 35 or more points in five of their six games this season. Expect them to do the same against Iowa State.
Prediction: Texas -16 over Iowa State (-110 at Bet365)

Georgia Big Winner Over Vanderbilt
The heart tends to jump a beat when you see a number like the 38 points the Georgia Bulldogs are laying against Vanderbilt Commodores. Let me put those fears to rest.
Georgia is a very good football team. Vanderbilt is not. The No. 1 ranked Bulldogs have won four of their six games by 30 or more points. That includes a 46-point victory against the Oregon Ducks and a 42-10 beatdown of the Auburn Tigers last week.
Vanderbilt lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide by 52, a comparable team to Georgia.
This game is in Georgia and the Bulldogs will cover, probably easier than expected.
Prediction: Georgia -36 over Vanderbilt (-110 at BetMGM)
Watch: Saturday 3:30 p.m. ET SEC Network, FuboTV
Packers Bounce Back
Here’s a stat that will have you running to your favorite online sportsbook. In the Green Bay Packers’ last nine games following a loss, they are 9-0 ATS and eight of those games they won by double digits.
They host the New York Jets on Sunday and are favored by seven, the line coming down from its opening number of 7.5.
The Jets have won two straight and are brimming with confidence. An angry Aaron Rodgers takes them down a peg on Sunday at Lambeau.
Prediction: Green Bay -7 over NY Jets (-110 at Caesars)
