UFC 257: McGregor Poirer Rematch

At UFC 257, Conor McGregor returns for a rematch with Dustin Poirer. The lightweight stars will meet Saturday, January 23 on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi, for a contest that could decide the next title challenger.

McGregor is currently the biggest name in UFC, so this one’s a must-see. A co-main event will pitch Dan Hooker against former three-time Bellator MMA champ Michael Chandler.

Here are some online betting options:

Bet the Moneyline

McGregor is heavily favored to defeat Poirier in the main event, -300 to Poirier’s +240.

What does that mean for online bettors? To make $100 on McGregor, you have to wager $300. A $300 bet will bring back a total of $400. Bettors are laying heavy odds here, because McGregor is highly favored.

For Poirier, a bet of $100 will return a profit of $240 if he wins. A $100 wager would bring back $340, which is the original $100 outlay plus the $240 profit.

The McGregor odds suggest that some big-money gamblers will take a shot on him, possibly betting six figures in their assessment of a likely outcome.

Bet the Methods of Victory

The outcomes of a fight include a KO/TKO (knockout, technical knockout), a submission, a decision, the rare disqualification and the rare draw. A draw will usually pay in the 50-1 range, but that result almost never happens.

There’s an important distinction for online bettors who wager on boxing and MMA. In boxing, a fight that ends inside the distance will be a considered a knockout or disqualification, for wagering purposes.

But in MMA, there’s also a submission. This has the same effect as a boxing match, in that one fighter wins inside the distance, but submission is a separate betting category. A submission is generated by the losing fighter, who will tap out.

A KO/TKO, for the most part, is determined by the referee.

Bet the Undercard

You can find value throughout the undercard. In the co-main event, for example, Hooker is the -125 favorite against Chandler, at +100. The board is saying this fight should be close, and both fighters are expected to be competitive.

Bet Like You’re Buying Stock

Odds fluctuate depending on the betting. Decide what you consider good value for a particular wager, then try not to chase it. If you like a slight favorite, say, at -110, and it moves to -130, there’s less value. If you didn’t make the bet at -110, it’s considerably more expensive at -130.

See if the next round of betting lowers the odds. This is just one example. Overall, it’s good to know what range you consider a fair deal, a good deal or a non-playable one for all wagers.
