The proxy fight waged by Wynn Resorts’ largest shareholder against director John Hagenbuch ended just days before the company’s annual meeting when he quit the board rather than face a contested re-election. Former Nevada Governor Robert Miller (l.), whose seat wasn’t up until 2020, also resigned. Both were close friends of former Chairman and CEO Steve Wynn.

Big Easy, Formerly Mardi Gras, Fully Reopened
With more than 500 slots now in operation, the former Mardi Gras Casino, now the Big Easy in Hallandale Beach, Florida, is back in business following Hurricane Irma’s devastation September 10. The poker room and simulcast area opened earlier. Fontainebleau Resort owner Jeffrey Soffer (l.) purchased the property and has plans to renovate it.
MGM Springfield’s First Performer Will be Stevie Wonder
Pop legend Stevie Wonder will help celebrate the grand opening of the MGM Springfield in a concert on September 1. The $960 million casino resort is opening August 24 in Massachusetts’s third largest city.
Florida Amendment Reaps Disney, Seminole Millions
In April, Disney Worldwide and the Seminole Tribe both gave $5 million to Voters In Charge, the group behind Amendment 3, which would give voters exclusive rights to authorize future casino gambling in Florida. The measure will appear on the November ballot and will pass with 60 percent approval.
Plans Unveiled for New Downtown LV Resort
D Las Vegas and Golden Gate owner Derek Stevens announced plans to develop the first wholly new casino on Fremont Street in years. Features include a 777-room hotel, a nightclub, rooftop lounge, a pool and spa, events space and a pedestrian bridge connecting it all to a 1,500-space parking garage. It will be built on the site of the now-demolished Las Vegas Club (l.).
Horseshoe Casino Lures Topgolf to Baltimore
Topgolf, a high tech driving range company has joined Caesars Entertainment in developing a non-gaming corridor on the Baltimore waterfront adjacent to the Horseshoe Casino Baltimore. The family-friendly entertainment complex will be spread over six acres.
Louisiana Gambling Bills In Final Stages
Two gambling bills await Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards’ (l.) signature. One would allow the state’s 15 riverboat casinos to move within 1,200 feet of their current locations and impose gaming position limitations instead of space restrictions. The other bill would legalize fantasy sports betting but require voter approval in each of the state’s 64 parishes. But a third bill, renewing the contract of Harrah’s New Orleans is more problematic.
