On This Day In Sports History
On June 3, 1961, 65-1 long shot Sherluck stunned the crowd at Belmont Park, winning the Belmont Stakes by two lengths and ending Carry Back’s Triple Crown bid. Ridden by 21-year-old Braulio Baeza, Sherluck outpaced the 2-5 favorite, who finished seventh. In the winner’s circle, owner Jacob Sher was notably congratulated by former President Dwight Eisenhower.
On This Day In Sports History
On June 1, 1925, 21-year-old Lou Gehrig began his legendary 2,130-game playing streak by pinch-hitting against the Senators. The following day, Gehrig replaced veteran Wally Pipp at first base, who was sidelined by a slump and headaches. A native New Yorker in his third season, Gehrig would remain a fixture in the Yankees' lineup for 14 years, not missing another game until May 2, 1939.
