Tribe Hopes To Launch Pokertribe.com
In a $10 million deal, the Oklahoma-based Iowa Tribe will purchase a 51 percent stake in Pokertribe.com, the first tribal-owned online gaming venture developed by Universal Entertainment Group of Florida. The tribe hopes to launch the website in early 2017. Under the tribe’s gaming compact, the website will be unavailable to Oklahomans.
Turning Japanese
Japan’s integrated resort bill, passed December 14, is the first step to an estimated multibillion-dollar gaming industry. There are still many questions yet to be answered such as the location of the casinos, the tax rate and the ownership structure. And the country’s prime minister, Shinzo Abe (l.), has taken a hit in public opinion polls since the bill passed, and some question how that will influence the development of casinos in Japan.
Judge Rejects Florida’s Request
The state of Florida recently requested that U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle reconsider his November 9 ruling allowing the Seminole Tribe to continue to offer blackjack (l.) at its casinos. The state wanted the judge to shut down the games, but Hinkle said the “original opinion correctly analyzes the issues.”
New Jersey Considers Expanding Online Gaming to Racetracks
A new bill in the New Jersey Legislature would allow for “internet café” gambling at the state’s racetracks, Monmouth Park and the Meadowlands (l.). The bill allows racetracks to partner with existing online sites to offer on-site online gambling to customers at the tracks
