On September 23, 1845, Alexander Cartwright and a group of young men in New York City officially organized the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club. They adopted a set of 20 formal rules (the "Knickerbocker Rules") that established key elements of modern baseball, including diamond-shaped infields, three outs per inning, and tagging runners rather than throwing the ball directly at them.
On September 22, 1911, 44-year-old Cy Young earned his 511th and final Major League Baseball victory, pitching a 1–0 shutout for the Boston Rustlers against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Throwing his 749th career complete game in the process, Young capped off a legendary 22-season career. His 511 wins stand as one of the most untouchable records in professional sports history.
