On This Day In Sports History

On April 10, 1976, Brewers’ Don Money hit an apparent walk-off Grand Slam against the Yankees, only to have it disallowed. Umpire Jim McKean had called time at the request of New York’s Chris Chambliss just before the pitch. Instead of a 10–9 Milwaukee victory, the blast was wiped off the board, and the Yankees held on for a 9–7 win.

On April 8, 1956, 24-year-old amateur Ken Venturi suffered a historic collapse at the Masters, carding a final-round 80 to lose by one stroke. Jack Burke Jr., who began the day eight strokes back, surged ahead with a 17th-hole birdie to claim his first major title. This tournament also marked the beginning of CBS’s continuous television coverage of the Masters, a broadcast tradition that remains today.
