In the winner’s circle, owner Jacob Sher was notably congratulated by former President Dwight Eisenhower.

On June 1, 1925, 21-year-old Lou Gehrig began his legendary 2,130-game playing streak by pinch-hitting against the Senators. The following day, Gehrig replaced veteran Wally Pipp at first base, who was sidelined by a slump and headaches. A native New Yorker in his third season, Gehrig would remain a fixture in the Yankees' lineup for 14 years, not missing another game until May 2, 1939.
