Pennsylvania Casino Opens Sportsbook

Pennsylvania’s Mount Airy Casino Resort cut the ribbon last week on its retail sportsbook, located in a 7,000-square-foot area shared with the property’s 12-table PokerStars-branded poker room.

The new gambling area offers 40 TVs for sports viewing, luxury lounge seating and 12 poker tables. It also features eight sports betting kiosks for 24/7 betting just off the casino floor in a 3,800-square-foot private location, suited to entertain approximately 75 guests.

“We’re constantly investing in our player experience and are proud to offer our customers both a retail sportsbook and an online interactive gaming experience,” said Todd Greenberg, Mount Airy’s general manager and chief operating officer. “Now, our guests can watch, bet and play cards all in the same integrated location—and during sporting events’ infamously long commercials, they have the option of gaming from their phones at the world’s largest online poker site.”

The venue is inside the former Gypsies Lounge space. Mount Airy has had online betting since the start of football season in September, when it became Pennsylvania’s first casino to go live with an online sportsbook prior to the physical location being built. The site was originally known as BetStars when it first launched in New Jersey, but changed its name in August after a partnership deal was struck between FOX Sports and TSG.

Mount Airy’s sports betting partner is FOX Bet, which provides the platform for both online and retail sports betting.

On May 25, 1935, Ohio State sophomore Jesse Owens delivered arguably the greatest 45 minutes in sports history at the Big Ten track meet in Ann Arbor. Owens broke three world records and tied a fourth, setting new marks in the long jump (26′81/4"), the 220-yard dash (20.3 seconds), and the 220-yard low hurdles (22.6 seconds), while equaling the 100-yard dash world record (9.4 seconds). Despite his individual brilliance, Michigan narrowly edged out Ohio State for the team title, 48 to 43.5.

On May 24, 1918, Cleveland outlasted the Yankees 3-2 in a 19-inning marathon at the Polo Grounds. Stan Coveleski pitched a remarkable complete-game victory, but the hero of the day was Joe Wood. Having converted from a pitcher to an outfielder after his arm "went dead," Wood launched a game-winning solo homer into the left-field bleachers—his second home run of the afternoon—to finally seal the win for Cleveland.
