Michigan House Approves Online Gambling Bill
The Lawful Internet Gaming Act, which would let casinos offer online gambling including poker and sports betting, recently passed the Michigan House in a 68-40 vote. Sponsor state Rep. Brandt Iden (l.) said players could register to gamble online through the state’s three commercial casinos or tribal casinos if compacts are amended.
Leagues Continue to Pursue Integrity Fees
While initial states such as New Jersey outright refused to include so-called “integrity fees” to sports leagues in recognition of legal wagering on their games, New York has included such a fee in its new bill.
Report: Puerto Rico Studying Legalizing Online Gaming
According to a report at Games Magazine Brazil, the Puerto Rican Tourism and Social Welfare Commission has begun studying possible legislation to legalize online gaming in the U.S. territory. The proposal would authorize the Tourism Company of Puerto Rico to regulate licensing.
Rush Street Interactive Begins Regulated Sports Betting in South America
Chicago-based Rush Street Interactive announced it is the first U.S. company to launch a regulated online sportsbook in Colombia. The country is the first in South America to regulate online gambling. Rush Street Interactive President Richard Schwartz (l.) said the Colombian expansion is a precursor to further expansion in South America and also the U.S., where it operates the Playsugarhouse online casino in New Jersey.
Swiss Voters Approve Gambling Act
A referendum on a new gambling act for Switzerland has been overwhelmingly approved by Swiss voters. The bill allows the blocking of foreign betting sites in the country. The referendum was approved by 73 percent of voters. Justice Minister Simonetta Sommaruga (l.) said voters wanted to allow gambling but with certain restrictions.
Atlantic City’s Ocean Resort Races to Make Opening Date
The Ocean Resort (l.) in Atlantic City—formerly the Revel casino—is working to make its announced June 28 opening date and will receive a special licensing hearing before the New Jersey Casino Control Commission. The hearing is scheduled for June 20. Meanwhile, casino officials showed off improvements to the property to reporters as it readies to launch.
Sports Betting Coming To Mississippi Choctaw Casinos
Following unanimous approval from its tribal council, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians soon will offer sports betting on professional and college sports at its three Mississippi casinos, including the Golden Moon (l.). The council also approved skill-based gaming, fantasy sports, eSports and a new slot product. State lawmakers also approved a sports betting measure.
Canada Expected To Allow Sports Betting
Canadian gaming industry journalist Harley Redlick said Canada will follow the U.S. and allow sports betting within two years. He said Canada’s views on sport wagering are “old fashioned” and will “cost jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars” while making “underground bookmakers rich.” Under Canadian law, wagers on single sporting events are prohibited.
