Play Smart from the Start: One-Stop Shop for Responsible Gambling

A new program introduced by the American Gaming Association—Play Smart from the Start—shows players how to make gambling a fun and entertaining experience and how to avoid the pitfalls that sometimes accompany that experience.

Studies have consistently shown that less than 2 percent of Americans have serious problems with gambling. But most gambling companies agree that if even one person is harmed by their product, that’s one person too many. So the American Gaming Association (AGA) has launched a new digital resource center called Play Smart from the Start Consumer Hub, a one-stop shop for players to find tools, information, and support on how to best enjoy their gambling experience. It’s built to make responsible gaming part of the everyday experience, not something players have to work hard to understand.

Healthy Checklist

Responsible gaming is the goal, and Play Smart from the Start stresses that responsible gaming shouldn’t be an afterthought. Whether you’re a first-time bettor or a seasoned player, maintaining a healthy relationship with gaming revolves around three foundational habits:

  1. Bring the Right State of Mind – Start every session by checking in with yourself. Are you calm, present, and prepared to play on your terms?
  2. Know the Game You’re Playing – Understand the rules, odds, house advantage, and how your choices influence outcomes.
  3. Act Intentionally – Set clear time and money limits, pause for breaks, and assess how you feel before, during, and after betting.

Simple Steps

At the heart of the consumer hub are practical tools designed to support players before, during, and after their gaming experiences:

  • Pre-Play Checklist: A brief, self-reflective tool encouraging players to consider their mindset, environment, budget, and game choice before placing a wager.
  • Know the Game: Their comprehensive glossary explains odds, house advantage, and common gaming terminology to clarify the mechanics behind slots, table games, and sports betting.
  • Responsible Gaming IQ Quiz: A self-assessment allowing players to evaluate how well their habits align with smart play principles.
  • Easy Connections to Support: Prominent links to the National Problem Gambling Helpline (1‑800-GAMBLER) and contacts for state-level self-exclusion programs to ensure help is just a click or a phone call away.

The goal of Play Smart From The Start is to help players build confidence, clarity, and control every time they play.

Research & Rewards

A key insight that inspired the program is that effective responsible gaming is less about restriction and more about empowerment. Grounded in behavioral science and informed by player research, the messaging platform is meant to meet players where they are.

When players understand how the house advantage works, why breaks matter, and how to align play with their emotional state, they enjoy their experience more and play smarter.

Play Smart from the Start builds on the AGA’s long-standing Have a Game Plan campaign and its ongoing commitment to advancing responsible play. By centralizing and modernizing this work under the Play Smart from the Start campaign, they offer a streamlined, holistic platform accessible to all.

Future Success

The AGA’s goal is simple: to normalize intention in every bet. Playing smart from the start should be instinctive, not aspirational. With intuitive tools, clear messaging, and easy access to support, the hope is that Play Smart from the Start becomes synonymous with the modern gaming industry.

Responsible gaming thrives when built into the fabric of play, not layered on top of it. With this program, both players and the industry now have a clear, accessible path forward.

The blaze sparked a panic among 6,000 fans, resulting in one death and over 100 injuries as the wooden stands were leveled within 30 minutes. Remarkably, reconstruction began immediately, and a game was played on the field the very next day.
