An online casino could launch soon after the West Virginia Lottery Commission meets July 22.
“We have had discussions with all of our casinos,” said Lottery Director John Myers. “We expect one could be in a position to launch in July if their suppliers achieve licensing approval.” The lottery submitted emergency rules for online casinos to the secretary of state in May, and the public comment period ended July 11.
Observers said DraftKings Casino or FanDuel Casino could operate the state’s first online casino app. Both recently released new, stand-alone online casino apps: DraftKings in New Jersey, and FanDuel in Pennsylvania. The two daily fantasy sports operators also offer online sports betting apps. DraftKings currently provides the sportsbook for Hollywood Casino in Charles Town, and FanDuel is the online sportsbook provider for the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs.
Online casino apps are expected to offer slots, blackjack, roulette, video poker and live dealer games. DraftKings also is creating some exclusive titles. According to FanDuel, 82 percent of new online casino customers play slots.
Besides, Hollywood Casino and the Greenbrier, West Virginia land-based casinos include Mountaineer Casino in New Cumberland, Wheeling Island in Wheeling, and Mardi Gras Casino in Cross Lanes. All were closed from mid-March through early June due to Covid-19. Every casino in the state is eligible to receive an online license.
