The Goal:
Beat the dealer’s hand with a better Three Card Poker hand, or make the best possible three-card hand you can. It uses standard poker hand rankings, but since you are only dealing with three cards, the hierarchy is slightly adjusted to keep the action moving!
The Basics:
- Ante Up! You start by placing an “Ante” bet. This is your initial wager to get into the game. (Optional: Some tables offer an optional ‘Pair Plus’ bet. This bet pays out if your three-card hand contains a pair or better, regardless of what the dealer has.)
- The Deal: Both you and the dealer receive three cards.
- Your Decision: You look at your three cards. Now you have a choice:
- Fold: If you think your hand isn’t strong enough, you can fold. You lose your Ante bet (and any Pair Plus bet).
- Play: If you like your hand, you make a ‘Play’ bet, which is equal to your Ante bet. This means you want to challenge the dealer.
- Dealer Qualifies: After you make your decision, the dealer reveals his/her hand. For the dealer’s hand to qualify, they need at least Queen High or better (More on this below.)
So, what is a better hand?
Hand Rankings (from highest to lowest):
- Straight Flush: Three consecutive cards of the same suit (example: 8, 9, 10 of spades)
- Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same rank (example: three queens).
- Straight: Three consecutive cards, any suits (example: 8,9,10 of any suit)
- Flush: Three cards of the same suit (example: King, 3, and 10 of spades)
- Pair: Two cards of the same rank (example: two aces)
- High Card: None of the above; the highest card (example: the highest of the three determines the hand’s value)
When Do You Win?
Well, the most basic way to win is when the dealer doesn’t qualify. You just get your bets back (the Ante bet is paid out even money, and the Play bet is returned fully).
If the dealer qualifies, you win if your hand is better than his/her, you win money on both your Ante and Play bets according to a predetermined paytable. On the other hand, if the dealer has a better hand than you, you lose your Ante and Play bets. The winning hand is decided as per the rankings explained above.
If the dealer qualifies and it’s a tie, as in you have the same hand, both your Ante and Play bets are a push, i.e., you get your bets back.
Ante Bonus: If you have a Straight, Three of a Kind, or a Straight Flush, you automatically win an “Ante Bonus” even if the dealer beats your hand (as long as you made a Play bet). The payouts vary by casino.

- Always make the Play bet when you have an Ante Bonus hand. If you have a Straight, Three of a Kind, or a Straight Flush and you make the Play bet, you will always be paid the Ante Bonus, even if the dealer beats your hand!
