On July 2, 1958, the Stardust opened on the Las Vegas Strip. Behind the glittering neon and the world's largest swimming pool, the Stardust also became the quintessential Mob-run cash cow. Its extensive history with the massive skimming operations of the 1970s eventually became the primary inspiration for Nicholas Pileggi's book and Martin Scorsese's film Casino. It was imploded in 2007.

On This Day In Sports History

On July 1, 1971, the Union Plaza opened as the world’s largest casino, shifting mega-resort energy to downtown Las Vegas. Now known as the Plaza Hotel & Casino, it remains a historic anchor of the Fremont Street Experience.
